Grand Festival Concert
Deaf Shepherd
Deaf Shepherd is a name that will likely trigger many happy memories for people on Jura. In the early years of the festival, this band came over and created such an atmosphere that we had them headline 3 years on the trot. That period is now fondly remembered as 'The Deaf Shepherd Years' So what better way to recapture that atmosphere than to have them back for our 18th festival.
For those who are unfamiliar with the band, Deaf Shepherd are a group of 6 hugely talented musicians on fiddles, pipes, whistle, bouzouki, guitar&vocals and Bodhran. They draw their influences from all over Scotland , combining traditional tunes and songs with original & contemporary pieces.
They first formed in 1993 and have performed consistently all over Scotland & Europe at top festivals to sell out crowds.
"Deaf Shepherd are quite simply the best folk band Scotland has produced in many a year. They are irresistible, playing with fire and precision, continually injecting cleverly timed fresh explosions of excitement into their propulsive, roller -coaster sets of tunes. They don't so much as bring the house down as build the house into a frenzy of excitement."
Rob Adams reviewing Celtic Connections - The Herald
"With Deaf Shepherd, you can't have too much of a good thing, you can't fault them, and it's very hard to stay in your seat."
Norman Chalmers - Scotland on Sunday
Deaf Shepherd have also produced three top class albums to great acclaim.
It's barely conceivable that this outfit are not signed to a major label! "Even In The Rain" is quite simply one of the most exciting albums which has emerged from Scotland (or anywhere for that matter!) in the past few years.
Irish Music Magazine
After having a quieter spell, concentrating on their own projects the band are now back in full swing with the addition to their line up of the fantastic Shetland fiddler Jenna Reid and the charismatic, energetic piper Findlay Macdonald.
Considering the band themselves have said that Jura is one of their favourite gigs we can be guaranteed that this band are going to put on a rousing finale to the Saturday night concert.
Dougie MacLean
Well what a treat we have this year getting to hear one of Scotland's best and most famous singer - songwriters up close in our own Craighouse Village Hall. Although MacLean has performed in some of the biggest venues across the globe, he has an uncanny knack of creating a special, intimate atmosphere in the village halls of his native Scotland through his songs and stories.
“Dougie MacLean is Scotland's pre-eminent singer-songwriter and a national musical treasure” (SingOut USA) who has developed a unique blend of lyrical, 'roots based' song writing and instrumental composition. He has built an international reputation as songwriter, composer and extraordinary performer which has led to concerts and festivals all over the world including New York's Carnegie Hall, Glasgow’s Royal Concert Hall and London’s Festival Theatre. MacLean’s songs have been covered by hosts of artists, including Paolo Nutini, Amy MacDonald, Ronan Keating, Mary Black, Frankie Miller and Kathy Mattea. His song Caledonia has become one of Scotland's most popular contemporary songs and his music has been used in Hollywood films (eg Last of the Mohicans), TV Drama (eg BBC's A Mug's Game) and he’s been the subject of three BBC TV music-documentaries.
Dougie has received numerous gold discs for album sales, two prestigious Tartan Clef Awards, a place in the Scottish Music Hall of Fame and an OBE in the New Year Honours list!
Mary Ann Kennedy
Mary Ann Kennedy is probably best known as the voice of the Scottish Radio shows – Celtic Connections and Global Gathering. She was named ‘Radio Presenter of the Year’ at the international Celtic Media Festival in 2007. She is also often seen presenting traditional music shows on television.
Mary Ann is also a fantastic musician in her own right. She is a fine Pianist, Harpist and Singer. Daughter of the famous Gaelic singer and tradition bearer – Kenna Campbell, Mary Ann was bound for a life in music. She is one of a select band of singers to have won both the Seann-Nòs and An Comunn Gaidhealach Gold Medals at the National Mòd.
As the co-founder of the Gaelic group, Cliar, she shared in their success in being awarded the inaugural ‘all-time' Best Album accolade at the Scots Trad Music Awards.
Her expanse knowledge of the traditional music scene coupled with her natural stage presence makes her the perfect MC to guide you through what will be a fantastic night of music.

Patrick is from Glasgow and has learnt his music from the fantastic institution St Rochs, who have seen many fine musicians pass through their ranks including Kevin O Neil, John McCusker, and Deaf Shepherds Claire McLaughlin and Mark McGuire. Paddy himself has won many competitions on both the accordion and harp.
A finalist in last years Young Traditional Musician of the year, Paddy has went on to entertain audiences with his lively Trio up and down the country. His passion for his music shines through in his playing and indeed in his working life as he is now a development officer for the fantastic Comhaltas Ceoltaoiri Eireann who promote Traditional Irish music and culture around the world through festivals, competitions and teaching. He will be accompanied by the superb Julie Reid on Bouzouki and Adam Brown on Bodhran. Have a wee look at their fantastic set from last years final to see what great music we are in for.

Fred Quimby
Stoned Holy Rollers
Stoned Holy Rollers were spawned in the turbid musical waters of the 20th century! As well as guaranteeing an evening of harmonic & rhythmic delight they will dip their collective toes into such diverse musical forms as Gospel, Rockabilly, Jazz, Blues, Punk & Reggae but contrive to make it all their own.
Unconstrained by labels & pigeonholes they move fluidly across genres and fuse their disparate influences into a rockin & rollin oneness where 3 or 4 or maybe 5 minds can crack and musical magic is created.
Literate & Intelligent but never condescending, they weave a tender trap and pull their audience into their Stoned & Holy & Rollin domain.
This Life is short – Enjoy!

Willie McAskill
Brothers Willie and Tabs MacAskill began singing together in the late nineties. Leaving the family home in their late teens to go their separate ways, on meeting up again, they discovered that they had gravitated towards the same kind of music, learning the guitar and honing voices they shared a great admiration for songwriters such as Neil Young, Alex Chilton and Steve Earle. The boys formed an acoustic duo and were warmly received in the town they now called home - Inverness. Crafting Everley Brothers type harmonies that were centred around Willie's songs about love, life and alcoholism , they became full time musicians.
It was from this duo the alt-country band the Lush Rollers were formed in 1998, they travelled around, played lots of gigs, recorded some critically acclaimed albums and after 10 years called it a day.
It is now that we find the MacAskill brothers have come full circle and are performing as a duo once again, the voices have matured and the harmonies are tighter, the songs very powerfull and they have added some new songs to the repertoire of old classics. If you like music with substance that is sung from the very depths of the heart then we think you will enjoy these guys.
