Youth & Re-union!

This seems to be this years theme as we have the finalists of this years young traditional musician of the year and two former winners of the same competition with Ewan Roberston of Brebach and Emily Smith. Then there is the exciting prospect of the Original Jura Ceilidh Band celebrating their 21st year by getting on the stage again to keep us dancing.

Breabach

Breabach are one of the most inventive and diverse bands around today. Their huge sound is dominated by the twin Bagpipes of Calum MacCrimmon and Donal Brown and further complimented by the extraordinary fiddle playing of Patsy Reid.

Add to this double bass and the charismatic and energetic guitar playing from Ewan Roberston and we may well be struggling to keep the roof on the village hall.

Breabach's versatility never fails to shine through, so don't be surprised to see flute, whistle, song and step dance all thrown in to the mix.

The bands success has not went un-noticed with nominations at the Scots Trad Music Awards for 'Best up and coming artist' 2006 and 'Best folk band' 2007 and 2008. Indeed Ewan Robertson is also the 2008 Young Traditional Musician of the year.

'A young group performing with technical assurance and a feel for traditional idioms.. their raucous, driving attack is energising and exciting' The Scotsman

'Frightingely young to be this accomplished' Eric Worral

Emily Smith

Though only in her mid twenties, Award winning Scottish singer/songwriter Emily Smith has firmly established herself as one of Scotland's leading lights in folk music.

Smith specialises in re -working traditional songs, mainly from her home region of Dumfriesshire. Her band compliments this material wonderfully on fiddle, guitar, double bass and banjo with Smith herself adding in the piano and accordion.

'A vocal storyteller with grace, style and simple elegance' Julie Fowlis

Emily has proved she has a natural talent for song writing being the first winner from Scotland at the USA song writing competition in 2005.

'Smith could become to Scottish folk music what Joni Mitchell is to it's Californian cousin' Q Magazine

Emily's outstanding musical talents have also seen her become BBC Young Traditional Musician of the year in 2002, and more recently Scots Singer of the Year in 2008

The Jura Ceilidh Band

2009 will be The Jura Ceilidh Bands 21st Anniversary and we are delighted to announce that the boys have agreed to get back together for this years festival to mark this occasion. David, Ross & Archie don't really need much introduction to Duirach's who all have fond memories of being entertained by their lively swingy sound throughout the years. For those of you who were unlucky not to catch them however, this was, and is one of the best ceilidh bands around and their albums 'The Jura Ceilidh Band' and 'Trip to Cape Breton' are still highly regarded influential albums on the scene today.

"The cross over between Scottish Dance and folk music, has at last, been successfully achieved" Robbie Shepherd BBC Radio Scotland

Jura Accordionist David Macdonald, a stalwart of the hebridean, west coast style will team up yet again with one of the best fiddlers in Scotland Archie MacAllister. Together with the well respected folk singer/guitarist Ross kennedy also playing banjo & fiddle they will keep you dancing well in to Sunday Morning!
